The Book of Life

In the book of life the pages turn
We work, we love, forget and learn
New beginnings every day
And memories that slip away
Joy and laughter, pain and sorrow
Expectations of tomorrow
People meet and part again
with friends of theirs from way back then
The world it turns and life goes on
The ever changing eternal song
And we like microbes in the dust
Do what we will or what we must
Trivial things, we do discuss
In school, at work or on the bus
Or watch people who we do not know
Talk with each other on TV shows
The news we read or watch TV
What happens in the world to see
We soon move on from these events
And turn our thought to other intents
We sleep, we dream, we live, we die
Or stare up at the starry sky
And pose the question of our self
Are we alone on this cosmic shelf?
The Universe it does not sleep
It does not dream it does not weep
It turns, expands, is born anew
As gases through the ether spew
In the book of life the pages turn
And we mere mortals dearly yearn
For happiness and peace of mind
As down the road of life we wind
We, are of no consequence
Our short time here will one day end
And all the things we held so dear
Will one day all just disappear
