Nighttime
Silence descends
Like a blanket upon the land
Birdsong is stilled
Twilight is close at hand
Traffic ebbs as the Lamps light up
And people meet for a drink down at the pub
Nightshifters ride on buses and trains
To carry out jobs, sometimes met with disdain
The rats they are creeping
Out of their lair
looking to forage
What little is there
As the moon rises
The world becomes still
And the Wolf and the Vampire
May well have their fill
For those who would venture
Out into the night
For those who are brave
And foster no fright
See the darkness like velvet
As it spreads all around
And trickles like honey
Onto the ground
The nightwatchman calls
Three and allīs well
To the clanging chimes
of a faroff churchbell
We lay in our beds
Under blankets and quilts
And sleep till the morning
Innocent of guilt
