Roads of Iron

To the men who built the iron roads
For the trains with precious and heavy loads
Tracks of iron that span the lands
Measured out by clever hands

Tons of earth and dynamite
Clear the path toward the light
Through tunnels carved into the earth
In dangerous and  perilous work

The silver rails they span the globe
The all encompassing steely road
That bring civilization or so they say
To  places near and  far away

With steam and fire, dirt and dust
The virgin trains through landscapes rushed
Viaducts,canals and cuts
Hacked out by men with strength and guts

Today, the trains glide silently
Powered now by electricity
But the clickety clack of the railway line
Is etched forever into our minds

Passengers bid friends goodbye
As the fields and cities pass them by
Onward to their destination
At some faraway railway station

The silver tracks wind through the land
The bedrocks of a bigger plan
That let us ride upon the rails
Through cities, deserts, hills and dales
